How to Check Transmission Fluid

Your transmission is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. Just like any part, though, it may need service sometimes to keep working properly. So, how can you tell if one of the key parts of your transmission isn’t working? Signs that you can look out for include not being able to shift into higher gear, difficulty downshifting, randomly switching gears, and more. Below, our team will go into these signs and others to help you learn when there’s a problem with your transmission control module.

Pat Peck Kia examines all the signs of a bad transmission control module to help drivers in D’lberville, Gulfport, and Hattiesburg know when to have your transmission looked at.

What Is a Transmission Control Module?

A transmission control module is an electronic part that regulates the gear shifting in an automatic transmission. It monitors when you’re accelerating or slowing down and decides when your transmission needs to shift gears. Think of this computerized part as the brain or control room for your transmission.

What are the Signs of a Bad Transmission Control Module?

Your transmission’s sole purpose is to change gears as you speed up and slow down. If there’s a problem with the part that controls when that shifting should occur, you’re going to notice it in the way your car drives. Here are some signs that there’s a problem with your transmission control module:

  • Can’t Shift into Higher Gears:  If you step on the accelerator and you hear the engine rev, but you don’t go any faster, you probably have a transmission issue. To accommodate more power, the transmission has to shift into a higher gear. If the control module won’t let it do that, you won’t be going anywhere fast.
  • Delayed Shifting: Along the same lines, if you try to go faster, nothing happens, and then a few seconds later your car shifts into gear and accelerates, you should probably have your transmission looked at as well.
  • Difficulty Downshifting: The flipside is if you can’t get out of a higher gear. As you slow down and stop, your transmission should gradually shift into lower gears. If your vehicle won’t downshift, you likely have a bad control module.
  • Randomly Switching Gears:  Another sign that your control module has gone bad is if the transmission seems to be picking gears at random. If your gear shifts are all over the place and don’t match your speed, or if it’s randomly shifting into neutral, schedule service right away.
  • Stuck in Gear: The other extreme is if your transmission won’t shift out of one gear. If it’s stuck in neutral or remains in the same gear, regardless of how you’re driving, have the control module checked out.
