How Often Do You Need an Oil Change?

A common service you’ll need to have done to your vehicle is to have the oil changed. Changing your oil will help keep your engine performing smoothly as you cruise around D’Iberville, Gulfport, and Hattiesburg.

But how often do you need an oil change? At Pat Peck Kia, we wanted to let you know about the factors that determine how long your oil will last, so you can have it changed at the appropriate time.

oil changeSynthetic or Conventional Oil?

The first thing you’ll want to do when figuring out when you’ll need to change your oil is to determine if your car is using synthetic or conventional oil. Both oils have their benefits, but when it comes to longevity, synthetic oils will last longer than conventional oils.

With conventional oil, you’ll want to have it changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If your car’s engine uses synthetic oil, then a change will be required every 7,500 miles to 10,000 miles.

Understanding Your Driving Habits

Knowing what type of oil your vehicle uses can help you start to figure out when you should change the oil. But with there being a range of miles, how can you decide exactly when your oil is ready for a change?

Your daily driving will have a big role in your oil’s wear. Your daily commute may be spent cruising on the highway at higher speeds, or driving within traffic, stopping often. These things can cause the wear of your oil to happen at different rates.

You also may need a change more frequently depending on the season. More extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can add more wear to the oil.

Understanding what type of driving you’re doing can help you determine if your oil should be changed toward the earlier or later side of the range.

Determining If You Need an Oil ChangeHow to Check Your Oil

One habit that is useful to have, is to check your oil often. When you open your hood and pull out the dipstick, you’ll want to take notice of the color and smell of the oil. You also will want to properly check the level to make sure there’s enough oil within your engine.

If you’re unsure how to correctly check your oil and what exactly you should be looking for, we’ll be happy to help and inspect your vehicle for you.
